The Best of the DFCHL - Forwards

The discussion regarding whether Tyurin is worth 5 1st round picks got me to thinking is there anyone worth that bounty, which lead me to start thinking who is the best player in the DFCHL. I've decided to separate the forwards and the defensemen and concentrate on the forwards first. I am listing the top 20 players taking all things into account (age, salary, stats, and attributes). So since we are factoring in age guys like Joe Thorton and Jarome Iginla arent going to be on the list, you can look at it as who is the most untouchable in trade talks. Here is my list:

20. Vladislav Evseev (30, 8.5M 3 years) - This guy did it all...some would argue he was better than Joe Thorton

19. Rick Nash (30, 7.5M 2 ye...read more.

Fans Dismayed at loss of Tyurin

Fans gathered outside the HSBC arena today to voice their disapproval of loss of star defencemen Vyacheslav Tyurin. The 25 year old russian was a 1st round pick for the Sabre in 2007 and has played six impressive seasons on the blueline, establishing himself as one of the top defenders in the league. However, the sabres administration, and inparticular new General Manager Stephen Hicks, were unable to agree terms of a new contract with Tyurin who became a restricted free agent last month.

No member of the Sabres administration were available for comment, however, an unnamed source within the club said;

'We tried hard to sign Tyurin but he wasn't the only player who needed a new contract and there is only so much ...read more.

Thrashers land update: End of an Era?

Over the years, the Thrashers front office had become renowned for their blockbuster trades: though their GM was never a big spender at the deadline, there used to be the draft-day deals targetting youth and the offseason specials designed to bulk up the lineup for the upcoming season in a quest of never-ending playoffs success.

However things cooled off quite a bit over the last two seasons, with only the former kind of trade happening on a regular basis, as if the record 6-Cups had turned the front office into complacency... That is, of course, until that excruciating 2nd round 7-game exit against a Senators squad that would go on to win the 2014 DFCHL Cup. Allowing an opponent to mount ...read more.

Power Rankings

Here is my pre-season power rankings of the teams. These rankings are somewhat crude and just based on a quick glance at the teams as well as last years standings and will be updated after the first few weeks of action.

Ottawa - No real holes on this team
Calgary - Very strong overall team, but lacking ideal forward depth
Atlanta - Another very strong overall team, but has a few minor holes
St Louis - Great defense, but a young team with some soft forwards
Phoenix - Great offense, solid defense
Boston - After that great top line not that much to worry about
Washington - Dealt away a lot of gritty forwards
Chicago - Strong offense and defense, but big ques...read more.

Familiar Face in Pittsburgh

When Pittsburgh's management began looking at the free agent market to find a replacement forward or two after the retirement of Kristian Huselius and the departures of Vaclav Prospal and Daniel Corso, they quickly realized that their budget cap room would probably take them out of the running for some of the top available forwards. Nevertheless, one free agent intrigued them. That man was Jaromir Jagr.

Jagr spent his early career with the Penguins but has been only a distant memory for Pens fans for over a decade. He has played for seven other teams in his DFCHL career, winning three Hart and Art Ross trophies and taking the Maurice Richard trophy four times. Many thought Jagr would finally retire after last season but the 4...read more.
